A brief look at the AI girls up to now

After the Top 24 were picked, I told you who my favorites were (My favorite "American Idol 6" contestants). I talked about the AI guys yesterday, so I thought I would do the same for the AI girls today. Of course, if you had been listening to me live (or on memorex) on Idol Radio Show, then you already have an idea what my thoughts are.

Jordin SparksJordin Sparks - When I heard that Jordin was going to sing a Pat Benetar song, I thought it would be too much for her young (she's 17) voice. Though she did have some problems with the higher notes (shrieking, as Simon put it), she did a great job. The song showed off her vocal range and allowed her personality to shine through. Jordin has improved each and every week, and there is no reason to think she won't continue to improve. She is aiming for the upper level of the girls competition, and with a little work she will get there.

Sabrina SloanSabrina Sloan - Based on the past two weeks, I expected more out of Sabrina this time. She has a great voice and can belt out those high notes without a problem. But she struggled with staying on key when she transitioned from the slower part of the song to the more upbeat part. I do understand Simon's comment about her performance being a little robotic since I had a difficult time connecting with her tonight. Still, even on a bad day Sabrina is leaps and bounds better then most of the guys.

Antonella BarbaAntonella Barba - I was ready for Antonella to be gone back during the Hollywood Rounds, and nothing has happened since then has to change my mind. She has consistently been the worst girl singer each and every week, and this week was no different. The only reason she is still here is because of the photos that have been posted on the Internet (which I'm beginning to think were deliberately released as a way to get people to vote for her). Unfortunately, I think she will get enough votes to last another week. With any luck, AI will kick Antonella off the show so I won't have to listen to her sing next week (one can only wish).

Haley ScarnatoHaley Scarnato - Here is another girl I have not been impressed with since the start. I've never much cared for Simon's "felt karaoke" comments before, but that's how I would describe Haley's performances each week. Before tonight there have been worse singers to vote off, but I think she has reached the end. For me, her performance was just barely better then Antonella's. I don't see how she will survive another week, nor do I think she should.

Stephanie EdwardsStephanie Edwards - I do not see what everyone else seems to see in Stephanie. While I do think she has a good voice, I have yet to be wowed over. And her singing "Sweet Thing" tonight did nothing to change my mind. She had a very rough start to the song that, in my opinion, she never fully recovered from. I am impressed by her vocal range, but I think she still has a ways to go. The question is whether she gets the chance. With Antonella almost guaranteed to get through on her looks, this could be the end of the road for Stephanie.

Lakisha JonesLakisha Jones - There is no question, in my opinion, that Lakisha has one of the most powerful voices we've ever seen on AI (which is why she was one of my two Top 24 favorite picks). In addition to her voice, she is able to bring talent, maturity, and class to any song she sings. And when she can get a hold of a song like she did during Day 3 of the Hollywood Round or during the Top 24, she will bring the house down. Lakisha is also one of the only AI contestants to ever do a Whitney Houston song justice on the show. Lakisha had the second best performance of the night.

Gina GlocksenGina Glocksen - I have a new name for Gina: The female Bo Bice. This rocker girl took control of the stage and didn't let go until after she was through with it. Before tonight, Gina wasn't one that stood out to me one way or the other. I just didn't have much of an opinion about her. She wasn't bad, but she wasn't great. She was just there, sailing on through week after week. But now I know this girl can rock, and I look for more great performances from her. Without a doubt, a top 3 performance tonight.

Melinda DoolittleMelinda Doolittle - If you didn't know that Melinda was all woman before, you know it now (though since she was a Top 24 favorite pick for me, I already knew it). From the moment the song started, Melinda commanded that stage like she had been out front for years. By far the best performance of the night, and second only to Lakisha's Top 24 performance for the entire season so far. Thankfully I recorded AI tonight, and it will be a long time before I allow Melinda's performance to be taped over. Look for Melinda to join Lakisha in the Final 4.

Without a doubt, the girls ran circles around the guys again tonight. It is shaping up to be a girls year on AI. If the guys don't immediately step it up 20 levels, most of them will be gone by the time we get to the Final 6.

So tell me what you thought of tonight's performances. Do you agree with my best and worst picks? Let me know.

From starbase63:

Worst part of Jordin's performance was the band...they were going too fast. "Heartbreaker" is a fast song, but as someone who has played it before, I give major props to Jordin for not passing out. I'm sorry, I've never been a fan of the AI Band, most musicians I know think the are akin to a Hoover vacuum. The Nashville Star Band kicks the AI Band's collective butts.
Antonella and Haley, I agree, have reached the end.
Gina finally showed the Gina I've been waiting for, and I said it to my wife right before Randy said it on tv...every week I've wanted to see her go for the throat and got let down. She finally tackled it and saved her place for now.

Last night the girls were better than the boys. I believe a girl will win this year. And I believe it will be between Lakisha and Melinda. I agree Allen I'm so ready for Antonella to go home. I looked at dial idol today not sure if it's right or not but it says Stephaine and Haley are going home. I think Stephaine is a much better singer than Anotnella. It's sad to see that better singers are getting sent home just b/c people for sorry for Anoonella.

You know, I mentioned this once before, I'm not horribly fond of Lakisha. Although she's got the power, she's consistently hit bad notes in each performance, too. Maybe it's nerves, if so - she's got to get a better handle on them. If Melinda could up her game to the level she's at now (building that confidence) - the others should be improving each week, too!
