One last post about Sanjaya Malakar

Sanjaya MalakarI had not intended to make another post about Sanjaya Malakar, but two things happened today which made another post a necessity. But I promise this will be the last one for at least three weeks.

(Disclaimer: I reserve the right to post about Sanjaya again should he be voted off during the next three weeks. So unless you want to read about him again before then, I suggest you vote for him. )

The first thing that happened was a blog article I found on Reality TV Magazine today. The article was about AI's treatment of Sanjaya since the Top 24 performance. It does a much better job expressing my opinion then I did.

Is American Idol Being Fair To Sanjaya Malakar?

Every year on American Idol there always seems to be one contestant who takes the blame for every other contestant getting eliminated. During American Idol 3, it was Jasmine Trias. During American Idol 4, it was Scott Savol. During American Idol 5, it was Kevin Covais. This year, it is Sanjaya Malakar.

Often the American Idol fall guy (or girl) doesn’t do anything to deserve the ire of viewers, other than survive in the competition while other popular contestants get eliminated. However, this year the show and the judges seem to be contributing to the animosity toward Sanjaya Malakar. For the last four weeks, American Idol host Ryan Seacrest has paired Sanjaya Malakar up on stage as the final one left with the last to be eliminated contestant. (Not that Ryan Seacrest should take the blame, because he is likely only following the script that producers have given him.)

First, Sanjaya Malakar was paired with Rudy Cardenas, then with AJ Tabaldo, then with Sundance Head, and most recently with Brandon Rogers. Such a pairing means that many of Rudy, AJ, Sundance and Brandon’s fans are likely going to blame Sanjaya for their favorite’s elimination and voice their anger on American Idol message boards. And it’s not that Sanjaya Malakar is getting paired up because he’s always the next lowest vote getter, because when Sanjaya went up against Rudy, Ryan Seacrest revealed that he was in the top four vote getters.

The judges also have contributed to the viewer anger at Sanjaya, whether indirectly or directly. After Sundance Head’s elimination, Paula Abdul said Sundance was one of their finest, but also went on to say “And it has no disrespect to Sanjaya, congratulations, or anyone here.” Of course, by reacting with such shock over Sundance's elimination and by calling out only Sanjaya’s name, it was likely disrespect to Sanjaya. As one would expect, Simon Cowell has been a little more direct in targeting Sanjaya. According to Extra, when asked about Sanjaya Malakar winning American Idol, Simon Cowell said “Let me tell you this. He’s not going to win. I won’t be back if he does!” Whether that comment will actually hurt or help Sanjaya though is up for debate, because Cowell made no secret of his dislike of Taylor Hicks, and it didn’t stop him from winning.

An added bonus for the American Idol fall guy (or girl) is that they often become the subject of various conspiracies to account for their continuation in the competition. With Jasmine Trias, it was Hawaiian voters dominating the phone lines. With Scott Savol, it was Vote for the Worst. With Kevin Covais, it was Vote for the Worst again. With Sanjaya Malakar, it is Vote for the Worst, Howard Stern, teen girls infatuated with his hair, and apparently Indian call centers.

Is the fact that producers seem to be highlighting Sanjaya’s continued survival in the competition by always pairing him up with a soon to be eliminated contestant fair? Is this stacking the deck against Sanjaya? Or could it actually be helping Sanjaya? By seeing him in the bottom two on stage week after week, some viewers could be building up sympathy for Sanjaya. Post your opinion of if it is fair for American Idol producers to keep drawing attention to Sanjaya Malkar in the elimination shows.

The above blog article is exactly what I was trying to express in my last two entries. I understand that Sanjaya does not have the best vocals in the group (he even admitted that tonight) and that he was voted into the Bottom 3 last week. But the way AI is focusing on him during the elimination shows does not seem right to me. And that is what my gripe was all about.

The other thing that happened today was Sanjaya's performance on AI tonight. Singing You Really Got Me, Sanjaya finally let loose and had fun. During the pre-song video, Sanjaya admitted he did not have the best vocals of the group. He put an exclamation point on that statement by roughing up his voice and shouting half the lyrics. Clearly, this was his way of addressing all the comments about his reserved performances. Like him or hate him, you have to admit that Sanjaya came out of his shell tonight.

Once the video is posted somewhere, I will link to it.

Whether or not tonight's performance earns Sanjaya another week, we will just have to wait and see. There is a large contingency of people who do not want to see Sanjaya make the Final 10 since it will mean he gets to go on the AI6 Tour. I want to see Sanjaya make the Final 10 because I think the tour will help him tremendously.

So what are your thoughts?

I think the tour will do him good. In a year time no one will remember the winner, but they will remember Sanjaya...not because of his voice but because he is entertaining...Its called the "IT" Factor in show business. If anyone doubt that, please tell if you will ever buy a CD from this year Winner. Answer NO...But if I asked, what interest you the most about AI, you will say Samjaya!

Alan:
Interesting article that you found about Sanjaya at that site, and I understand the sentiment...

I posted at the only other forum that I belong to, based on tonight's performance, Sanjaya honestly won his return to the show next week...

Based on my scores that both my parents & I have been keeping, I think that it will be either Chris Richardson or Phil Stacy going home...

RE: Grethcen (marymagdalene)

As of this posting, Phil Stacey is ranked as high as number 2 and as low as number 4 on DialIdol.com. While that may change some before the night is out, I don't see it changing enough for him to go home (and I thought he had one of the worst performances of the night..... I just don't get the guy).

Chris Richardson, I thought, did well enough tonight to stay another week, which is saying something since I don't like him much overall.

i totally agree! the whole AI gang isn't helping Sanjaya's case. but tonight shoulda been like a slap in the face to them. i was very impressed and obviously so was the scary girl in the audience.

Tried to post earlier...but no take?

Anyway, i think that Sanjaya is going to be one of the most memorable characters from AI in Season 6. I am not sure of his real talent for the long run, but was glad to see that he did not have to stand at the end tonight as one of the bottom two!
However, a comment about the fact that other factors such as "Vote for the Worst" sites and other forces coming to bear on the results seems unfair in its snarky motivation. Skewing the results is not fair for those who are really so talented and should be the winners.
Great reading, Alan!

I do have to agree now that he's in the final 10, that the tour will help him , but I don't think he'll even come closr to winning.

Actually, the real winner is Melinda Doolittle (so say the judges already) ~ but if I vote for anyone this season, it'll be Sanjaya (just to see if Simon keeps his promise to leave AI) ~ plus, I feel Sanjaya deserves the win for all the torture he's been put thru, and he's taken it so well!

I feel sorry for Sanjaya. This is like John Steven all over again. I remember during season 3, there were articles about John Stevens ruining the Idol franchise. When he outlasted Jennifer Hudson, the poor kid received death threats. After he finally left, then Jasmine Trias took his place as the resident whipping boy/girl.

It is a tactic that I find repugnant on this show. Every season, they heap abuse and ridicule onto one contestant they have deemed "undeserving" whilst conveniently forgetting that it was the JUDGES themselves who decided the Top 24 and the PUBLIC who is voting for them. At some point, the judes saw talent and potential in Sanjaya, John, Jasmine, Kevin, etc. They torment these kids for ratings and to generate buzz, and at the same time pimp their "chosen ones".

I commend Sanjaya for keeping a sense of humor and enduring all this vitriol.

This show really bring out the ugly side in people. The hatred they display towards all these young kids (who were naive enough to follow their dreams) is scary.

I totally agree with what you are saying. I've been saying the same thing myself all season. It makes me very bitter at AI and the judges and Ryan for doing that to the poor kid. Sanjaya is one reason I tune in, during this boring season, because he is refreshing, and he has a sweet voice. I think that those who have left were not more talented or special than Sanjaya, and I'd like to see Phil go before him too. The bottom line is, it's not right to use him as a scapegoat. They did the same thing with John Stevens in season 3. You're right there is one every season at least. And you're exactly right how they deliberately pair him up with the departing person, to make it look like it's his fault. Very cruel. I really have no respect left for the judges, and this season is the most boring ever (though there are 2-3 people I find interesting but nobody I find compelling).

Thanks for articulating this.

I know this is all old news. I just wanted to post here because as a fan of Sanjaya I do like to go back, periodically, and read what was said during the height of the competition-with, of course, the added dimension of hindsight.
It appears this site was a haven of reason and justice in a world gone mad, and for that I want to add my thanks to all of you who wrote and commented.
