Please quit picking on Sanjaya!

As those of you who read my blog regularly knows (and if you don't know, why haven't you been reading my blog regularly?), I picked Sanjaya as one of my four Top 24 favorites (My favorite "American Idol 6" contestants). I liked the kid from the moment he flashed his 5,000-watt grin at the audition. I liked him even more when he belted out some Stevie Wonder for the judges.

What? You don't remember him being that good? Then watch it again.

I dare you to tell me his audition was no good. Go on, I dare you. Don't let the fact that I'm holding an axe in my hand and I'm not afraid to use it stop you.

Now don't get me wrong. I've been rather disappointed in Sanjaya so far in the competition. I don't know if it's nerves, a lack of maturity, or something else, but every week he's clearly been holding back. The talent I know is in him is not shining through. His performances seem restrained, demure, and distant. He has got to figure out who he is and how to let that talent out. And the sooner the better.

But I will say this with 100% conviction: Sanjaya deserves to be in the Top 12. (Okay......... you can quit throwing rotten tomatoes at me now.)

Yes, I do believe that. Is Sanjaya better then some of the guys that have been eliminated so far? No. Is he better then some of the guys still in this competition? Yes.

That's right. You heard me. Sanjaya is not the worst of the guys, or the girls for that matter, in the Final 12. In my opinion, Brandon Rogers, Phil Stacey, and Chris Richardson should all have been elimiated before now. All three of them have turned in consistently poor performances, worse then Sanjaya. Jared Cotter, AJ Tablado, and Rudy Cardenas should all still be in this competition.

No, I didn't forget about Sundance. He never should have made it past the Hollywood Round. Throw all the fake beards at me you want. I'm not gonna change my mind.

If the Top 12 were made up of the guys I think should be in there (Blake Lewis, Chris Sligh, AJ, Jared, Rudy, and Sanjaya), then Sanjaya would most likely be at the bottom of that list. His only salvation in this scenario would be that Haley Scarnato is worse than he is (why the heck was she voted through anyway?) and would save him one more week from being sent home.

With the way the Final 12 stands, there are three guys (Phil, Brandon, Chris R.) and one girl (Haley) that are worse singers then Sanjaya. So short of all four of them learning how to sing in the near future, Sanjaya will be safe for a while.

And another thing: I am spitting mad at "American Idol" for what they have done to Sanjaya the last two results shows. It is obvious that those behind AI want Sanjaya gone (sound familiar, anyone?). What other reason would they have to make Sanjaya stand up on stage two weeks in a row and announce he is safe while the person he is standing with (first AJ and then Sundance) is out. Forums and blogs all around the country exploded with how Sanjaya cost those people a spot in the Final 12. IT WASN'T SANJAYA'S DOING, PEOPLE! He does not control who votes for him and who votes for someone else. In addition, the whole "Bottom 3" concept doesn't start until tomorrow's results show. So there is no reason to believe that Sanjaya just barely made it through each week.

So as I have demonstrated with my thoughts, opinions, and the written blog, Sanjaya is going to be around for a while. Please quit picking on him.

I think it's his lack in confidence. I liked his audition, but these past three weeks he hasn't been living up to his potential. He needs to realize that he must be good if he's in the top 12 of the most watched show in America out of the 50,000+ who auditioned.

I'm with you Alan. I've always liked Sanjaya as well. I think he's nervous on stage but he does have a great voice. I was happy that he made it to the top 12. He's seems like such a nice guy too. You can't resist that smile.

Thank you Alan. I think Sanjaya can go far in this competition. I think nerves are what's holding him back. He has a great voice and hopefully he can fight those nerves to show America that he deserves to be in the top 24.

I also think the judges have been extremly hard on this young man. I also think there are worse singers still in the competion. I think he'll be around for a couple more weeks at least. He just keeps smiling some how when Simon does his rant. Maybe that works in his favor.

Well, I'm NOT afraid of your cyber axe -- LOL!-- but I will say that after seeing the audition for the first time, I've changed my mind about Sanjaya. I will keep my eye on him.
HALLELUJAH that I've found someone who agrees with me on Sundance!! At least he's gone and is no longer an issue!
But, Blake? C'mon-- you gotta love Blake!!!

re: lmo

I do love Blake! He was one of my four Top 24 favorites, and I think he gets better and better every week. He was the best guy on the show last night.

OOPS! Sorry!! That's what I get for reading when I'm tired!!

Hmm... Glad to see the video clip. I saw his audition and now remember clearly that I really liked the unique quality of Sanjaya's voice, and yes I believed he deserved a shot. But, some of his top 24 performances were so off that I forgot how much I liked him. So that proves it pays to have that clip online. I have been outraged by the VFTW/Save Sanjaya tactics. I think there was probably a worthy principle to be respected in the decision have such a campaign. But, because of how poorly Sanjaya has performed since making the top 24, it seems to have become a classic case of the powerless becoming the oppressors. At this point, is the spirit of the campaign any less arrogant and damaging to the human spirit than are the comments made by Simon? I wonder how the contestants who have worked long and hard to have strong performances - both those who have left and those who continue to be strong. Of course it's not just a singing competition. It never has been. But, thanks to this campaign, it's not much of a competition at all. Sadly, as a result of the experience, Sanjaya will probably become The Biggest Loser. Maybe the show should be re-named, "No One Wins!"

Isn't there an interesting shift from the pre-audition, "I'm better than you" banter between Sanjaya and Sis, to how devastated he was when he was selected into the top 24 and she was not?

It's my impression that sis & the family, including Sanjaya, believe that sis is the more talented of the two - or maybe the one who works hardest at developing her talent, or maybe she is older(??) - either of which gets translated into "most deserving."

Sanjaya appeared so distraught over sis' loss, that it seemed to affect him more than his own "win." I suspected some of that was feeling guilty because he believed she deserved to move to the next round more than him, or maybe he knows that he's talented but doesn't get the same recognition as Sis, and therefore feels unworthy, especially believing it's what his family thinks. I'm not sure Sanjaya, though talented, is particularly driven. He strikes me as more of a free spirit. So, even that could get translated into "not deserving."

Hmm... Therapist "All Good" says Sanjaya must, on some level of consciousness, think that his family will never view him as the "winner" given the family consensus that sis is better. At 17, for the most part he probably still views himself thru the eyes of his family. Rather than return to his home environment and face that sense of invalidation (be it real or perceived) from his family, he's choosing to sabotage his chances, believing that his ego can't withstand facing that for the rest of his life.

you have got to be kidding. after tonights performances, and the last several, it is plain to see that sanjia lacks any credible talent compared to the other contestants. i will say that his audition was really good...but the top 7...i don't think so. sorry
