What is your opinion of the new "Just To Feel That Way" video?

I had planned to do part 2 of my Trip Down Memory Lane series today, but recent discussions regarding Taylor Hicks' video release for his single Just To Feel That Way has led me to talk about it instead.

For those of you who have not yet seen the video, here it is. Please note that some people have said the video can take a couple of minutes to display.

The video starts off with an interesting, artistic, black and white grainy look and feel, which I think goes well with the tone at the beginning. But when it switches to color, it doesn't look any different then what we've been watching for the last several months.

Part of the problem with the video is that Taylor can barely be heard above the instruments at various points. I was having to strain to make out what Taylor was saying from time to time, and I know the lyrics to the song. In addition, he uncharacteristically missed several notes during the song. To be fair, Taylor was under the weather the day the video was made. That could account for the hard to hear voice and the missed notes.

A few weeks ago, Taylor mentioned that the video for Just To Feel That Way would not be a standard music video, meaning it would not be something you would see on MTV or VH1 or any other similar music video venue. So we were expecting a different video.

But the video isn't different. It's the same type of video we've been seeing for months over at Rehearsals.com. For months we watched his practice sessions for various songs over there. And though we never saw one for Just To Feel That Way over there, we might as well have.

Please don't get me wrong. I am happy a video in support of the song has been released, even one that is intended to be a viral video like this one is. A video in support of the song was desperately needed. However, most of the Soul Patrollers I have talked to about this agree with most of what I've said. And if we have problems with the video, how can we expect it to help win over new fans and silence the critics?

What are your thoughts on the video?

I love the video- for online viewing. I wouldn't want this one to be on national TV- there is some untunefulness- but at least he didn't lip-sync- and you're right- sometimes you did have to strain to hear him above the band, but all in all, good effort, IMHO. I hope there's some acting or storyline in the one that comes out for broadcast.

Music videos are supposed to be an extension of the radio broadcast. It's like visual radio.

I don't understand why a different version of JTFTW is on this video instead of the radio version of this song. It's very important that both the music video song and the radio song are the same. This will help when new fans request the song on their local radio stations or when new fans download the song from sites like iTunes or Real.com's Rhapsody.

Also, this music video should have had a better storyboard treatment. Believe it or not sometimes viewers will watch a music video because they really like the video and then they will eventually fall in love with the song. For example Guns N' Roses "November Rain" was such a beautiful music video. It's also a great song but, it was the music video that caught my attention first. And because of that video I became a fan of that song. Here is a link to that video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPYkn82nz18

Music videos are very important for all of today's music artists since MTV went on the air back in 1981. MTV has really helped a lot of music artists to become superstars. That channel has done so much for the music industry. There are so many music video channels out there now for every music genre you can think of.

Unless plans have changed, this is the only video being released for "Just To Feel That Way."

I like the video - it's very much Taylor. Guess I missed any mistakes in the vocals! LOL! From my perspective, I think it would be good for VH1 or wherever. Taylor's different and so is the video! I loved the color contrasts, the beginning & the ending - very much like Taylor!

I was disappointed in this video, and really did not understand its release, in any form, to even an internet audience. Although I love the "I'm in the room with Taylor rehearsing" feel, I am a dyed in the wool soul patroller who would be into the performance even if Taylor was humming the whole thing standing on his head upside down in a tub of jello (you know what I mean.)
What I am saying is that HE SHOULD HAVE WHAT ALL ARTISTS WHO ARE SERIOUS ABOUT AIRPLAY AND GENERAL PROMOTION HAVE! A REAL VIDEO, yes a slick one, READY FOR GENERAL CONSUMPTION that would promote his song.
My only further thought would be that he did not want to invest in this song. I do not understand all the costs involved with producing a video, but the fact that he did not feel that it truly represented him, may have something to do with this decision to not produce a slicker (hence more expensive) public version.
I just hope that with this lackluster out of the gate showing with this single, that he can recover on one of his better choices off the CD (I love Heaven Knows and The Maze for public consumption...The Right Place for private consumption) and blow everyone away with a great video to accompany its release!

Nice going Alan....

By now most know how I feel about Taylor not having a video..

I totally didn't take this as a video. I posted that it was just like watching rehearsals--

Then Decided to post no more cause things have a tendency to spiral out of control & there's no need for that..

I saw it as footage. I didn't know what to call it...

So all I can say is thanks for taking the words out of my mouth...

One less argument for me

he he he

I'll be sure to come back
this is cool Alan

I did not expect a REAL video so to speak. I think Taylor always makes clear the direction he is going with his projects but we just seem to intrepete things differently. He said what was the purpose for this video and how it was going to be made but once again, we are shocked when we get the finished product. Maybe one day we will be on the same page with Taylor.

I did not except anything more than a simple online video. Something similiar to what we saw on Rehearsal.com..

I personally don't see the big deal. My only complaint is, I kinda prefer the slower version of this song..

For me, this video confirms what I've suspected for months: J Records wants to torpedo Taylor.

Most artists release a single at least a couple of weeks before the album hits stores. Taylor didn't.

Most artists immediately release a video when an album is released. Taylor didn't.

Most artists release an album, then do the talk show circuit to promote the album and the single. Taylor made the rounds, but he performed "The Runaround" which wasn't the single, so even if a viewer liked the song, they could not request that it be played on their local radio station. In other words, those appearances did nothing to get radio airplay for Taylor.

The single was released about two months after the album. Supposedly, this was done to "test market" the material and allow the fans to have some input in choosing the single. That's RIDICULOUS! Record companies pay people a lot of money to make those kinds of decisions - people who are experienced in identifying hit songs. If, for some reason, they truly did want to test the waters to see which song would be the most appealing to listeners, that should have been done before the album was released.

When a single was finally chosen, no video was ever produced. I can't name one song in the last twenty years that made the Top 40 without a video! (AI winner's singles don't count because the show itself serves as the promotional tool.)

J Records is a major label. They know what happens when you don't release a video:

1) No one except die-hard fans know that the album is available
2) No one except die-hard fans know that a single has been released or what song it is
3) No one except die-hard fans will be contacting their local radio stations and requesting the song be played

When a "video" is finally released - about 6 weeks AFTER the single was released - it's not even a "real" video. It's a rehearsal clip using the rehearsal (live) vocal track and mix - which is inferior to the actual track that's available to the public. Of course, Taylor's fans like it. We like everything he does. But ... the whole point of a video is to introduce him to people who don't know who he is - who aren't already fans - and expose them to his music and make them want to go out and buy it. This video won't accomplish that. Even if it could, there's no way a non-Taylor fan would ever see it because it's not being released to the traditional video markets!

To top it off, I know of at least THREE New York City radio stations who did not even have "Just To Feel That Way" TWO WEEKS after it was released! Two of them are AC stations, which is the target market. (I called to request the song and was told they didn't have it.) So ... a major record label did not even provide the single to the AC radio stations in NYC, which is a MAJOR market!

This whole thing is a joke! I hate to say it, but I think J Records will dump Taylor before his second album. It's painfully obvious that they have no interest in making any real attempt to support him and promote his music. They have not done one thing that is traditionally done to promote a new artist and give him the best possible chance at success.

Taylor ... I love you. You're incredibly talented and you deserve so much better than the way you've been treated by your own record company. I hope things turn around very soon.

Ok, my thoughts... definitely different from what you see/hear on VH1 and MTV in the fact that it's actually live, and that is the true form of live: no touch-ups, no mixes to make it polished. Which, of course, means that I LOVE it! I love the fact that he took that kind of risk with his first video. He reminded me of what made me absolutely love him as a performer to begin with.

Thank you so much for this. I needed this as a pick me up, and a reminder of how music should be.

Can I buy you a drink :-)

You're GOOD!!

My thoughts exactly Alan. As a video for just US, it's fun but as a vehicle to the general public, it is lackluster and worthless.

well, well, well - this is interesting. Here's my 2 cents worth.
Who are we to judge what Taylor does? It's his dream he's living. He's doing what HE wants to do - not what his fans tell him to do. He's staying true to himself - which is what we love about him, why we voted for him, and why he became the American Idol.
Love the video or hate the video - I support Taylor.

Well i hate to say this but I think it sucks!! I am a musician(not famous but can belt out a tune) and he is off key, out of tune a lot! It is going from bad to worse for Taylor. I have the horrible feeling that he is really being sabotaged but WHY??
I don't know what is happening but in the video he should have made a honest to goodness real video where they use the CD version which is always the best anyway and you need to have something that grabs your attention about a video, nothing grabbed my attention except of course, because i am already a fan, his gorgeous face, lol!!
I am afraid a change is comin and its not going to good for Taylor. Its heartbreaking really for he really is so good!!
I agree with the person that said the record company has done everything to ruin his career not make it. Taylor has a good head on his shoulders and I don't believe he would have chosen for himself some of the things that have been put out there. He knows you have to get your single out there before you release your CD. I mean I will buy a CD based on the one single if a love that song, doesn't matter of I hate the other songs i will still buy it just for the one I love!!
Well enough said I really hope things turn around soon for Taylor or I am so afraid he will slip right through the cracks and be back playing clubs!! Now that would be a cryin shame hey!!

Re: Marla

It was never my intention to not support Taylor, so if my blog came across that way, I apologize. I do support him. However, I felt, as a fan, that I needed to put my thirty-nine cents in about how I felt.

UGGG... that was cheap and does not look good at all. That can not compete with vidoes today...

Shame. Shame. Something else for folks to dogg about Taylor.

Oy. Painful.

I saw Taylor at the NYC concert and read all the "I am a preformer, an on the road kind of guy" quotes he made.
Well, I was bored half way through the very short show. There were ROWS of empty seats -- and Taylor was not able to connect to his audience.
I think this very uncreative, badly taped, I am too embarassed to call it a video--video is showing that Taylor, although has some great qualities, is not a real talent with staying power.

Sorry guys, your Idol, is losing his stride.
