The story of the jukebox and Taylor Hicks

There is a good chance that this blog entry will result in my being tarred and feathered. After all, an Administrator of the largest non-official Taylor Hicks fansite shouldn't do something like this. It's imcomprehensible. It's unexcusible. It's inconceivable.

What did I do? I forgot about Taylor Hicks. That's what I did.

That distant sound you hear is my Webmaster, Steff, blowing her top.

How did this happen, you ask? At least, I hope you are asking and not going straight for the tar and feathers.

So there I was at Bennigan's earlier today, ready to satisfy the Monte Cristo craving I've had for almost a week now. I noticed that the restaurant had a new jukebox, a type I had never seen before. After placing my order, I decided to go check out this new jukebox.

Unlike the jukeboxes you grew up with, or in the case of you young whippersnappers, your father's jukeboxes, this new jukebox didn't contain vinyl 45 RPM records or CDs. Instead, it was 100% digital and contained thousands of songs from hundreds of artists. The touch screen made it quick and easy to navigate through the massive selection of music stored in it, which is what I did at first.

Five minutes later, and only halfway through the letter A, I opted instead to try and look for a few of my favorite singers and groups. Inspired by last week's 80s theme on American Idol, I started looking to see what they had available from that time period. I searched through the letter B for the B-52s (no luck), the letter G for the Go-Gos and Debbie Gibson (no luck), the letter J for the J. Geils Band (no luck), and the letter N for New Kids on the Block (finally.... success). I put my dollar into the jukebox and played two New Kids' songs (Hangin' Tough and The Right Stuff).

Hey. I heard that. I got enough snickering from the couple in the corner of the restaurant when the first song started playing. I don't need it from you as well. Besides, I've already blogged about liking New Kids on the Block, so that shouldn't come as a surprise to you.

After selecting my two songs, I did some last minute browsing through the on-screen catalogue. As I quickly rushed through the list of artists, I spotted American Idol Season 6 champion Jordin Sparks' album.

And suddenly it hit me: If Jordin's album is on the jukebox, then maybe Taylor's album is on there as well.

I quickly raced to the letter H and started scrolling. Sure enough I found Taylor Hicks listed. Clicking on his album cover, I saw that only Heaven Knows was available. I clicked the "Search for more of this artist" link and saw that there were three other songs that were available to be downloaded into the jukebox: Just To Feel That Way, Do I Make You Proud, and Takin' It To The Streets.

I quickly put my last dollar bill into the machine and selected Taylor's winning AI song, Do I Make You Proud. Unfortunately, it cost me the whole dollar to play the song since it costs fifty-cents to play a song and fifty-cents to download a song onto the machine. But it was worth every penny since I got to sing the song while dipping my Monte Cristo into my side of raspberry jam.

As I was driving back to my place after eating, something else hit me: Why hadn't I looked for Taylor's album in the first place?

The realization of that fact sat in as I made my way home. I, an Administrator of TheOfficialSoulPatrol.com, didn't even think to look for any of Taylor's songs until I happened to spot Jordin's album on the screen. I, who frequently listen to Taylor's music while sitting at my computer, had a complete and total brain fart standing there at the jukebox. At least I did end up playing one of his songs. And I could swear that I saw the bartender singing along to the song as she worked to clean up her bar. So that's got to count for something, right?

If you promise not to tar and feather me for this little oversight, I'll promise to never look at a jukebox again without first seeing if any of Taylor's songs are available. What do you say?
