If you're going to put down Taylor Hicks, then get your facts straight

Yes, yes. I know. It's been eight months since I last wrote a blog entry. I never intended to go that long, but time has a funny way of speeding up and getting away from you when you aren't paying attention. Plus there was the car accident to deal with (with a wonderful trip to the hospital that was proceeded with being taken out of my car in a neck brace and on a backboard) and a root canal to go through (I think I prefer the neck brace and backboard). But I'm back, now. Not that I ever blogged a heck of a lot anyway.

So what has finally brought me out of my blogging dry spell? Is it that Taylor has a new CD coming out in March? What about the fact that we get an actual single released to radio before the CD? Maybe the news about there being a real video to go with the single? Could it be that his long-awaited DVD has finally gotten a release date? Or that he is having huge success starring as Teen Angel in the national tour of the Broadway Musical Grease?

While all of that is worth blogging about, and hopefully I will actually do that someday, the reason I'm blogging today is: I'm sick and tired of people putting down Taylor Hicks without getting all of their facts straight. I mean, come on.... would a little research about the guy be too much to ask for before you skewer him and leave him on an open flame to roast?

Take Sean Daly (seriously, take him; I certainly don't want him). He is the pop music critic for the St. Petersburg Times. On the latest entry on his Pop Life blog, his topic was the "5 Worst 'American Idol' Top 12ers". He listed our Taylor Hicks as number three.

3. Taylor Hicks: My friend (and yet another upcoming Pop Life Idol Chat blogger!) Stephanie Hayes tells me the herky-jerky Season 5 Soul Patrol champ is currently touring with Grease. Not as Danny, mind you -- but as the Teen Angel! What is that, 5 minutes of stage time? Oof. Brutal. But, alas, appropriate.

Seriously? You wan't to take Taylor to task for having a 5-minute role? Does this mean that Frankie Avalon, who played the part in the 1978 movie, was less of an entertainer for playing the role? What about Davy Jones, Chubby Checker, Jennifer Holliday, and Al Jarreau? They've all played the part of Teen Angel on stage at one time or another. Do you think any less of them for playing that same 5-minute role?

So did you see the play? Read up on the play? Talk with anyone who has seen or read up on the play? Taylor's part may only be a 5-minute role, but he does get a few extra minutes when he joins everyone else on stage at the curtain call. On Broadway, this included him singing and playing the harmonica, both of which were extremely well received by the audience. Even on the National Tour, Taylor is getting additional stage time at the Curtain Call. And there have been reports that he will begin to sing a song or two from his new album for the audience as well.

Do you want more? How about this New York Post article from July 23, 2008 (while Taylor was still performing the role of Teen Angel on Broadway): "According to reports Taylor's presence alone accounts for an extra $150,000 in tickets sales per week." That $150,000 translates to around $10 million extra for the show for the 13 weeks that Taylor performed.

And lest I forget, how about the fact that Broadway Magazine called Taylor's turn as Teen Angel one of the "11 Best Star Turns on Broadway in 2008" or that he was called Broadway's Rookie of the Year?

You know, Sean, you were right about one thing: that 5-minute role was very appropriate for Taylor.

Another item about Taylor I saw recently comes courtesy of the Neon Limelight blog. The writer was revisiting one of Elliott Yamin's best performances on Idol, Home. After appropriately giving Elliott kudos for a great performance, she then said "Elliott was truly the people's idol. While Taylor Hicks shimmied and Katherine McPhee purred, Elliott made his way into America's hearts by just getting on stage and doing what he loved: sing–and sing well."

As much as I do love Elliott, how can you say he was the "people's idol"? I'm interested in knowing which people are being referred to here, because the people who voted didn't vote him the winner. I personally think that Elliott was and is a much better singer than Kat McPhee, but for me to say that Elliott is the "people's second choice of the season" would be wrong. Like it or not, Kat came in second that season and Taylor came in first.

I also take some exception to the way the blogger seemed to indicate that Taylor wasn't doing what he loved to do. I have no doubt at all that Elliott loves singing, as I think it shows in his face when I watch him perform. But it also showed in Taylor's face when he performs. And in his arms. And in his back. And in his legs. And in every part of him. The guy exudes enjoyment of what he is doing when he is singing. He loves it. And it's because of his love of singing and performing that his fanbase is as loyal as they are.

And as for all the bloggers and newspaper writers out there who repeatedly bash Taylor (and there are so freaking many of you), I have the following for you.

1) Taylor's debut album, despite your unbelief, has been certified as Platinum. Yes, I know the official sales count is about 704,000. But a Platinum certification refers to the number of units shipped, not the number of units sold. And since the certification of Taylor's debut album hasn't been revoked (and yes, folks, revocations can occur), then it means those other 296,000 units must have sold as well. So if you insist on bashing the lack of sales for Taylor's first album, make sure you properly mention it as Taylor's Platinum Certified first album.

2) Yes, we know that Chris Daughtry has sold more albums than Taylor. We get that. We don't begrudge the guy his success. But that doesn't mean Taylor isn't successful. He had a very successful 2007 tour, a very successful Broadway run, and now a very successful national tour of that same Broadway show. The guy is a success. And he's just getting started.

3) Yes, we know that Chris Daughtry has sold more albums than Taylor (deja vu, anyone?). But that doesn't change the fact that Taylor Hicks is the Season 5 Champion. Constantly repeating that Chris should have won just because Taylor hasn't sold as many albums as Chris isn't going to change the fact that Taylor won. So get over it already! Especially you, American Idol.

4) What do you mean you haven't heard anything about Taylor since he won American Idol? Have you been living under a rock for the last two-and-a-half years? If for some reason you have been living under a rock, then why not type "Taylor Hicks" into your favorite search engine? You'll get a nice list of all the forums, blogs, and sites about Taylor. And any site on that list will be more than happy to fill you in with what our favorite gray-haired singer has been doing since he won, though you may need to block out some time cause it's a pretty big list.

I could go on, but these are the basic transgressions I've noticed over the past couple of years. Will my blog entry make a difference? Doubtful. There are just too many people who write before they think and no way for me to get my little blog onto everyone of their screens. But if just one blogger or newspaper writer reads this and thinks before the next time they write something about Taylor, then my entry will have been worth it.

Thank you ALan-and welcome back!!
Its about time somebody had the guts to address this!!

excellent blog Alan, you make some great points. I feel the same way. But, if you're going to write a blog about how people need to get their facts straight, it would probably be a good idea to makes sure all of your facts are straight first. Taylor's debut album did not sell 804,000 albums in the U.S. It has sold 703,000 albums in the U.S. and 804,000 albums worldwide. Since the RIAA certification ratings are based off of U.S. sales, he has 297,000 albums not counted by soundscan, if you believe he actually sold a million. Personally I doubt it, soundscan does a pretty good job of tracking sales, and i've never heard of certifications being revoked. I could be wrong about that, but I did a google search and couldn't find any instances in which there was.

Hey, Alan!

Are you going to forward a copy of your blog to the people you mentioned? {Evil grin goes here}

RE: taylorhicksfan22

That's what I get for not double checking what I type. I had written down about 704,000 copies, but for some reason I read it as about 804,000 copies (the 196,000 remaining came from simple substraction as I was writing). I did not double check my numbers after I wrote that part, which I should have. That is certainly egg on my face.

As far as the RIAA, the basic formula for certifying an album is number of units shipped minus number of units returned. Since a Platinum certification requires that total to be at least 1 million, then it would seem safe to say that those additional copies ended up somewhere.

This is from RIAA's site: "We are often asked why we don’t just use sales figures from SoundScan. SoundScan measures over-the-counter sales at music retail locations, while the RIAA®'s certification levels are based on unit shipments (minus returns) from manufacturers to a wide range of accounts, including non-retail record clubs, mail order houses, specialty stores, units shipped for Internet fulfillment or direct marketing sales, such as TV-advertised albums. The other difference is that SoundScan's archive is only a few years old, while the RIAA® has tracked artists' sales levels for more than 40 years."

As far as the RIAA revoking a certification, I once read a newspaper article where the RIAA was looking into accounts of fraud regarding an album it had certified. The article stated that if the fraud proved true, they would take steps to revoke the certification of the album. I do not remember the name of the article and, like you, could not turn up anything on a search.

Even if SoundScan doesn't say so, I do believe Taylor's debut album has sold at least a million albums. I don't believe his album would have been certified Platinum otherwise, because there would have been more than enough returns (after all, the number difference back then was well over 300,000) to prevent certification.

Good to see you have recovered!

Great blog entry - you are so right - see Taylor in person and then make the judgement on his performance and style!

"Grease" has been such a fun gig for Taylor and should certainly garner him new fans! And if it hadn't been profitable, he certainly wouldn't have been asked to do the national tour.

And talk about additional opportunities the "Grease" team is giving him - selling his CDs, promotion for his music, chance to perform his own music, have after shows, etc.!

Let's see the bald one top that! Selling 3 million albums might be doable - assuming a million people actually bought 3! And to sell a million with practically no advertisement or radio play after promoting "The Runaround" during the holidays and releasing something as the single - that's worth more than what #4 was able to accomplish in my book!

Hats off to you, Alan, and keep up the good work!

Good Post There Alan! It is odd that some people seem to thrive on negativity. I can't understand why they don't take that energy & use it toward something positive. Like~if they do not like Taylor, then focus on someone they do like & support them!
Of course, there are those who just like to 'belly-ache' about any little flicker of hostility & do their best to turn it into a raging bonfire. Could they be looking for attention?
All that you said about Taylor is legitimate. He is a brilliant, as well as focused artist & he has made it clear that he will be around for a long time. We, who support him, know who he is & we're darned proud to be a part of his present & future.
To everyone out there who hears negative remarks, ask them if they have done their own research; then watch the 'body language' in their response ~ If they have one that is.
With that said, we will stand beside Taylor & watch him move forward & upwardly.
Oh Yeah ~ SOUL PATROL♥

thank goodness you're back alan!! please keep us posted--it's wonderful to read some intelligent writings rather than the woooo-hoos and seeing dancing smiley faces racing across my screen. i don't know a thing about the music industry but would ask you to explain to me why it took so long for the "whomp" cd to come out when it was talked up as he was doing his solo tour.thanks alan--keep it real.

You sure have a lot of anger to deal with. Maybe you should step away from the fanbase for a while. If you identify with Taylor and you can't control what happens to him, you'll never be happy. I doubt that he would pat you on the back for this blog. I'm sure this won't get out of moderation, but I haven't said anything all that rude, now, have I. I just spoke the truth as I see it.

RE: anonymous

Thank you for providing me with my next topic.

Hmm, so you assume that Taylor sold almost 300,000 more copies of his CD, just because his certification wasn't revoked? Sounds like you've OD'd on koolaide, or have been reading a certain sisters conspiracy theories for way too long. Those 300,000 weren't reported as being sold for this simple FACT....They weren't sold. Ever think of that one, Alan? Or are you so over the top in your fan support that you couldn't recognise a fact if it hit you in the face.

Fact...Taylor sold just over 700,000 copies of his CD, which is very poor sales for someone with the amount of exposure he had from AI.

Fact....AI is proud of it's high achievers, and since Taylor isn't the success story from season 5, then they should be able to proudly talk about who is, without snide remarks from certain jealous fans.

Fact...The person who wrote that review of Taylor, and every other review has a right to an opinion, be it negative or positive. And a five minute role is not something to gloat about.

Fact...There's a 99% chance that this post will never show up on your blog because we all know how you work. We've seen it before ;)

I've never written on your blog before, but I will say I am an avid Taylor Hicks fan and I hate to hear negative comments about him or his music. I love to hear Taylor sing, I use his songs as my ringtones. With all of that being said, I am not totally convinced he is as genuinely humble as I once thought. My reasons are many, but I will say it wasn't just his music, voice and energy that inspired me to vote for him on AI. Perhaps I'm just being sensitive, I hope so.
