Simon Cowell signs stars for Haiti charity single

Rod Stewart, Leona Lewis, JLS and Michael Buble have all agreed to take part in the Haiti charity single, which has been organised by Simon Cowell.

The artists will record a cover of REM’s ballad Everybody Hurts.

The Sun newspaper, which has teamed up with Cowell, said Robbie Williams, Coldplay, Take That and Sir Paul McCartney have also been approached.

Anoop Desai: Rooting for John Park

Anoop Desai has found someone he can identify with in American Idol Season 9: John Park.

Both Anoop and John Park held the musical director’s position with their college a cappella groups — Anoop with the University of North Carolina’s Clef Hangers, John with Northwestern University’s Purple Haze.

“Coming from an a cappella background, I’m always happy to see people from that background break into, for lack of a better term, mainstream music,” says Anoop, who plans to release a single called My Name in March, with an EP or album following later in the spring. “If he makes it past Hollywood week, it’ll be a real treat for him, I imagine, to get to sing with Rickey Minor’s band.

More Idol Headlines after the JUMP…

‘Idolatry’: Together, with the help of Shania Twain, we can survive the ‘American Idol’ audition episodes!

After nine seasons of American Idol, it’s not always easy to sit through the boob-boxers and accordion players and Gimmicky Gerties of the world as we wait for the revelatory powers of a Frenchie Davis or a David Cook or a Melinda Doolittle. (Apologies to @mdoolittle for foolishly leaving her off my 15 Best Idol Auditions countdown…but I digress.) So consider this week’s Idolatry — with my world-class cohost Jessica Shaw — as a bridge that leads from Chicago/Orlando straight to the Top 12.

Idol contestant puts Starke, Florida on the map

Dad, who owns the trucking company in Starke that Matt manages, was watching proudly Wednesday night.

“Well I watched it several times because I’m watching it through watery eyes and a lump in my throat naturally because of what he said, and that he never had seen me cry before. That was a devastating time for us,” says Jim Lawrence.

A decade ago, began ten years of shame for the Lawrence family.

“Now everybody knows. So we don’t have to feel like we have a secret anymore,” says Matt’s mom, Debbie, who was especially happy with Ryan Seacrest’s subtle commentary on the crime.

EXCLUSIVE: Missing Mom Of ‘Idol’ Contestant May Have Vanished By Choice

Police in suburban Chicago, IL think that an American Idol contestant’s missing mother may be AWOL on her own accord, RadarOnline.com has exclusively learned.

After Idol contestant Angela Martin’s mother, Viola Brown Martin, was reported missing on December 29, the family was frantic. Now, police are not so sure if Viola’s vanishing act wasn’t by choice.

“We are not 100 percent sure that she is not off on her own accord,” Glenwood Police Sgt. Derek Peddycord told RadarOnline.com. “There are some sensitive issues that I am not allowed to discuss. Out of respect for the family, they’ve asked me not to have too much contact with the media.”

Scott Brown’s ‘American Idol’ road to victory

As Scott Brown stormed to victory in the Massachusetts Senate race Tuesday night, I huddled with my daughters watching Fox. No, not the gloating election coverage on Fox News — I wouldn’t do that to impressionable young minds. We watched the flagship’s “American Idol” auditions.

This seemed fitting since, four years ago, Ayla Brown, the senator-elect’s daughter, captivated my kids during a short-lived “American Idol” run (my eldest daughter cried as hard as Ayla did when she got booted from the show). Ayla was an attractive though somewhat bland singer who belted out tunes by Celine Dion and Christina Aguilera. She had a chipper attitude and a limited vocal range. In short, good for TV.

First look: Kimberly Caldwell’s sexy new video

Eat your heart out, David Cook! Season 2’s Kimberly Caldwell invited Idol Tracker to stop by the set of her video for the song “Mess of You,” which was shot at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel (her debut album, “Without Regret,” is scheduled for release on April 6). And though it was her first time emoting, lip-syncing and strutting her stuff for a music video, Caldwell, who dated Cook just after his Season 7 win, seemed totally at ease, not just with the hair, makeup, fabulous outfits and all the fussing, but also getting thisclose to model Daniel Durakovic, with whom she nuzzled frequently — in the clip. Feeling comfortable in 5 1/2-inch heels, however, was another matter.

Caldwell arrived at 7:30 a.m. and, hopped up on Red Bulls, was ready to go all day and night. But first, she took some time out from shooting for a quick Q&A.

Jordin Sparks Designs Pennyroyal Silver Pendant to Benefit Haiti Relief

Los Angeles, CA, January 21, 2010 –(PR.com)– Singer and American Idol alum Jordin Sparks’ original sketch will be featured on a limited edition Pennyroyal Signature Collection pendant that will help fund mobile medical clinics in Haiti through Sparks Charities, an organization that aims to encourage young people to make a positive impact in their families, communities and world through volunteerism and service.

Mercado embraces role in revival of ‘Dreamgirls’

Syesha Mercado can relate in a personal way to Deena Jones, the 1960s girl-group singer she plays in the national touring company of “Dreamgirls,” running through January at Chi-cago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre. Beautiful, hard-working and am-bitious, Mercado, who was the top female finisher in the seventh season of “American Idol,” has been working toward stardom since childhood.

“For me, Deena represents a lot of things,” Mercado said in a recent phone interview. “The messages of ‘Dreamgirls’ transcend their time. It’s not just a story of African-Americans trying to get their music out; it’s also about the relationships you have with your family, and the message that if you dream — and if you work at achieving that dream — it’s going to happen for you.”

Studdard helps girl’s wish come true for second time

Keeping Ruben Studdard as a surprise is a hard thing to do, but Montgomery residents and staff members of Magic Moments managed to do just that Thursday evening at 129 Coosa, a downtown venue.

The event, “Raise a Glass to Magic Moments,” helped welcome the Birmingham-based organization to Montgomery. The organization’s Montgomery Regional Board was only recently formed and includes local business owners, executives and doctors.

But the most important guest was the little girl sitting quietly with her family watching people pack into the dimly lit room.

SHOW REVIEW: Society of Seven featuring Jasmine Trias

Michael Laygo, in a gleaming white blazer, sings “The Impossible Dream” and stretches “the un-r-e-a-c-h-able star” until the audience can hold its breath no more.

It’s a showstopper. But so is the next one: a little ditty from “Dreamgirls” called “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” the music stopping cold behind Jasmine Trias when she belts the grand finale.

And both these came only a few minutes after Laygo and Trias had teamed for “The Prayer,” the dramatic duet made ubiquitous by Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, The Scintas, etc.

CasiNotes: An ‘Idol’ semifinalist who’s taking singing seriously

ATLANTIC CITY has become a regular stop for “American Idol” insta-stars and their high-priced ticket fees. But through May, you can catch a former “A.I.” semifinalist for free at the Showboat.

Louis Gazzara appears as lead singer and emcee of “The Show,” the ‘Boat’s variety-show-cum-Mardi-Gras-parade that takes place three times every Saturday on the main concourse adjacent to the casino floor.

Longtime “Idol” fans will remember Gazzara as the 17-year-old belter on the show’s second (2003) season – the one that pitted eventual champ Ruben Studdard against Clay Aiken in the final round. Gazzara was one of the final 32 hopefuls that year, as was another current star, Josh Gracin.

David Cook Single ‘Light On’ Now Platinum

Congrats to Season 7 Idol winner, David Cook. His single, “Light On” was recently certified platinum by the RIAA.

The song debuted at #17 on the Hot 100 and #8 on the Hot Digital tracks chart when it was released in October, 2008.  It peaked at #4 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart in February 2009.

Anoop Desai Working on Debut Album

If you missed the first part of USA Today Idol reporter, Brian Mansfield’s interview with Season 8 Idol, Anoop Desai, you really ought to check it out HERE.

In it, Anoop has some very good advice for Idol hopeful, John Park, whose audition aired during Tuesday’s Season 9 Chicago auditions.

Part 2 was just posted, and here’s where it gets good–Anoop delivers the deets about his upcoming album, tentatively titled All is Fair, set to be released this spring.

    * Read Part 2 of the USA Today interview HERE.

His first single is called “My Name” and was co-written with Season 7 Idol, Brandon Rogers.  Other writing collaborators for All is Fair include Season 6 semi-finalist Jared Cotter (co-writer of Jay Sean’s smash “Down”), Nashville pop singer-songwriter Josh Hoge and Anoop’s pal, David Mikush.

Anoop has already tracked 7 or 8 songs for the album, “It’s just a matter of getting them into the studio and producing them, mixing them and mastering them,” says Anoop, “I’m still writing every day. If something emerges that’s better, we’ll put that on there, too.”

The sound will be more of a pop feel than R&B, and half the tracks he’s cut so far incorporate tabla and/or sitar.

“I think that’s a cool vibe,” he says. “That’s something I’ve been experimenting with a lot in my music–sort of bringing pop, R&B and Hindi music into one vein.

While the album will likely only be sold digitally in the US, Anoop’s got some contacts that can distribute physical releases in India.

“Both of the cultures I consider myself to be a part of–the South and India–have rich musical traditions, rich food traditions, rich literary traditions. It’s something that has been really nice for me, because I can draw from those rich traditions and feel part of them at the same time.”

Idol Headlines for 01/23/10

EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK: Kellie Pickler’s New Pixie Cut

First Kellie Pickler shocked fans by debuting new auburn hair at the CMA Awards, and then just a month later she was back to her signature blonde. Now the country star is giving PEOPLE readers a first look at an equally bold new do — a short crop! So what prompted Kellie to try a pixie cut? “My hair started falling out!” Pickler explains. “It was so damaged I looked like a scarecrow so I chopped it off!” During her recent USO trip to the Middle East, where she entertained and visited with troops in Iraq and Kuwait, her hair began falling out as a result of transitioning from blonde to red and back again. “I had two choices — look like a scarecrow or cut it,” she says.

Carrie Underwood: I “Had a Baby Pig Poop on Me”

“I have officially decided that I’m giving up the music business,” the country singer wrote Friday on her blog (to which fans must subscribe). “I’m going to become a professional sitcom actress!”

“LOL! Just kidding,” she said. The star simply got carried away filming her guest starring role — her sitcom debut — on CBS’ How I Met Your Mother. (Show regular Neil Patrick Harris shared an on-set snapshot with Underwood, 26, on Thursday.) “The show was so much fun!” she gushed, adding that she had “a blast,” and that the cast and crew “made me feel right at home and were super nice and great with me and my lack of experience.”

Her HIMYM stint sounds like a blast. “I got to hang out with the whole cast, dress up like a flight attendant, play a cavewoman, and had a baby pig poop on me…jealous?”

Blake Lewis challenges Season 9 beatboxer to a battle

It was the beatbox dis heard across the “Idol” world. Orlando contestant Jay Stone, who auditioned for the judges with a left-of-center version of the Beatles’ “Come Together,” told judge Randy Jackson he deserved a golden ticket to Hollywood just as much as Season 6’s Blake Lewis because he can beatbox and sing at the same time — snap!

So, of course, we reached out to Blake for a reaction, and he responded with a good-natured challenge. “This week on ‘American Idol,’ I got called out by a fellow beatbox contestant,” he told Idol Tracker. “I was so glad to see someone really going for it in the art form I love so much. If Jay ends up making it to the top 12, I’ll be sure to challenge him to a battle of skills.”

So You Think You Can Dance judge Nigel Lythgoe wants you to shut up

Hundreds of aspiring dancers invaded Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center this week, many of them not able to legally drink, hoping to be selected among the top 20 dancers in the country by an esteemed panel of elite judges. The event marked the first stop on the Season 7 audition tour for So You Think You Can Dance, the hit Fox series. Being taped, as it was, for national television, no dancer could speak to us on record for fear of spoiling the upcoming broadcast, and reporters were ushered around the Arsht Center under the constant scrutiny of a public-relations envoy.

Still, in the chilly confines of an upstairs wine bar in the James L. Knight Center, we managed to secure a one-on-one with Nigel Lythgoe, the show’s executive producer and chief judge. He spoke to us on his lunch break, midway through a full day of praising (or, more, likely, cutting down) dozens of fleet-footed hopefuls.

Susan Boyle May Retake Top Spot On Billboard 200

Susan Boyle’s “I Dreamed a Dream” may make a return engagement at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 next week, as industry prognosticators suggest her set could sell around 80,000 copies by week’s end on Sunday, Jan. 24.

The set is reaping the benefits of Boyle’s chat and performance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on Jan. 19. Boyle’s segment lasted for the first 20 minutes of the show, while fellow reality TV contestant Adam Lambert took up the the rest of hour-long broadcast. Expect Lambert’s “For Your Entertainment” debut album to also see a big gain next week.

However, Boyle’s climb back to No. 1 isn’t a done deal. The as-yet-recorded charity album “Hope For Haiti Now” could make a splashy debut on the tally next week, depending on consumer reaction to the set over the weekend. A No. 1 debut isn’t out of the realm of possibility and would mark the first No. 1 digital-exclusive set on the chart.

‘Hope For Haiti’ telethon draws, and rasies, millions

UPDATE: The “Hope for Haiti Now: A Global Benefit for Earthquake Relief” telethon raised has more than $57 million to date — a new record for money donated by the general public during a disaster relief telethon.

Also, the single “Hope for Haiti Now” is currently the top-selling iTunes album in 18 countries, the biggest one-day album pre-order in iTunes history.

The $57 million does not include donations by corporations, large private donors and iTunes sales figures, all of which are still being calculated.

We caught up with the Season 8 runner-up at the People Magazine-sponsored after party, where he was spotted early on chatting with Justin Timberlake. In fact, the two hit it off so well, JT offered to write a song for Adam!

Adam didn’t stay at the party for long since it took mere minutes for a line of fans to form, some of them famous (Chris Colfer from “Glee,” Maulik Pancholy from “Weeds” and “30 Rock”)

SAG Awards red carpet: Drew Barrymore’s dress is pretty, but Adam Lambert’s makeup is better

Drew Barrymore, this award show season’s most fearless fashionista, has taken another risk, choosing a navy blue gown with a stiff, asymetrical peplum, beaded chiffon ribbons and embroidery at the hem by L.A.’s own Monique Lhuillier.

She has one of the evening’s many untidy up-dos too, and a nude lip. Not sure the makeup is up to the glamour of the gown.

Adam Lambert’s makeup is much prettier.

Haiti Telethon: What You Didn’t See on TV

“The celebrities were so low-key. Everyone drove themselves, there were no handlers, no entourages,” adds the source. “Everyone was in a good mood. Most people showed up early and many celebrities, including Chevy Chase, Olivia Wilde and David Archuleta, stayed after the telethon was over so they could keep answering phone calls.

Jennifer Hudson: “I’m Just Glad I Didn’t Forget the Words”

Jennifer Hudson’s rendition of Paul McCartney’s “Let it Be” was simply stunning. She told me later, “I’m just glad I didn’t forget the words!” It hardly the case. She looked gorgeous, and her voice soared. She is poised to be a superstar of the new decade.

Jordin Sparks unveils her Shelby GT500 at Barrett-Jackson

Jordin Sparks visited the 39th Annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction Saturday, Jan. 23, at WestWorld of Scottsdale.

The “American Idol” winner from Glendale met with fans for an autograph session in the mid-afternoon, but before that, she checked out the “Jordin Sparks Special Edition” 2010 Shelby GT500 Super Snake.

As Sparks approached the Shelby Foundation Booth and saw the automobile, the singer excitedly checked out every detail of the car, pausing over the wheels, the trunk, the inside of the car, and at every inspection point, the singer flashed a big smile.

‘Glee’: Idina Menzel gets hot and heavy with Mr. Schu

“Glee” has wasted no time in getting Idina Menzel into the thick of the action.

The Tony Award winner has joined the show’s cast for the rest of the season, and co-creator Brad Falchuk says she fit right in when she showed up on set earlier this month.

“I already directed her in the first episode,” Falchuk said earlier this week during a visit to the “Glee” set. “She did two small scenes with Matt [Morrison], so we’ve started kind of easing her into it. She was great. I don’t come from a musical background so I wasn’t that familiar with her. … She was fun to work with, fun to direct.”

Josiah Leming Gets Ready to Release His Album

Season 6 Idol, Josiah Leming is getting ready to release his long-awaited album on Warner Brothers records.  In the meantime, he’ s releasing a song and photo a week on his My Space.

    * Check out Josiah’s  new song “Maybe” on his My Space HERE.

For those of you who need a refresher: Josiah was the 18 yr old Season 6 contestant who lived in his car and cried a lot.  He kinda had a meltdown in Hollywood, and in the end was not chosen for the Top 24, despite showing great promise in his audition (he performed an original song) and initially in Hollywood (check out his version of Mika’s “Grace Kelly”)

Josiah was signed by Warner Bros records in 2008, but the release date for his album has been delayed and delayed, causing some to speculate that there’s been trouble behind the scenes.  Certainly, that stubborn streak Josiah exhibited in Hollywood could cause problems with the label suits, no?

In the meantime, Josiah has released two very good EPs,  Angels Undercover and Punk Ass Rain.  And now, finally, Josiah reveals there’s a release date for the album.  He can’t get specific yet, but promises it will be very soon.  Yay.

The new song?  Me likes.  Josiah, at his best, writes from his heart and soul, all wrapped up in a memorable melody. This is good stuff.  I’m really looking forward to that new album.

Allison Iraheta – Disney Top 30 Countown – Interview

Thanks to @alliholics for this two part interview with Allison Iraheta on Radio Disney’s Top 30 countdown. Allison co-hosted the countdown this weekend.

Allison tells a hilarious story about her pet bird, Burrito. You see, there’s no love lost between Allison and Burrito. In fact, he bit her nail off a few days ago. (Ouch!) Then, she bit him back (Not really). A pretty fun interview once you get past the obligatory discussion on how to pronounce Allison’s name (Iraheta, with a long I, peeps)

In part two, we’re treated to a live, acoustic version of “Don’t Waste the Pretty”.

Check out the interview, after the JUMP. It’s been too long since I put up an Allison post!

Monday Morning Mediabase Update – Jan 18-24

Daughtry’s latest song “Life After You” is also now their latest Top 10 song. In fact, Daughtry has two top 10 songs now with their current single Top 10 on HAC and their previous single Top 10 on AC (actually, returning to the Top 5). Also hitting milestones this week are Adam with his single becoming his first top 30 hit (on Pop) and Mandissa notching another Top 15 song on CAC.

Pop looks ready for some major moves. There are lots of songs ready to go recurrent and lots of songs dropping like stones. LLWD has managed to claw it’s way up to top 21 this week so it’s now in a position to start pushing songs recurrent itself. Should be another interesting week on that chart.

Here are your Monday Morning Mediabase Updates for airplay as of 2:47 pm of 01/24/10 after the jump (trying to be consistent with the peaks and Idol Chatter).

Adam Lambert:
“Whataya Want From Me”: ^28 Pop (31), ^34 HAC (36)

Carrie Underwood:
“Cowboy Casanova” : ^33 AC (34)
“Temporary Home” : ^15 Country (14)

Danny Gokey:
“My Best Days are Ahead”: ^42 Country (43)

Daughtry:
“Life After You”: ^9 HAC (11), ^27 Pop (28), ^29 AC (29)
“No Surprise”: ^5 AC (6)

Elliott Yamin
“Can’t Keep on Loving”: 44 AC (39)

Jordin Sparks:
“Battlefield”: ^25 AC (21)

Katharine McPhee:
“Had it All” : ^22 AC (25)

Kellie Pickler:
“Didn’t You Know How Much I Loved You”: ^21 Country (21)

Kelly Clarkson:
“Already Gone”: 3 HAC (2), ^7 AC (8), 17 Pop (15)

Kris Allen:
“Live Like We Are Dying”: ^10 HAC (10), ^21 Pop (24), ^35 AC (37), ^46 CAC (53)

Mandisa:
“He is With You”: ^15 CAC (19)

Ruben Studdard:
“Don’t Make ‘Em Like…”: ^19 UAC (19)

Note: Numbers indicate position on the chart while numbers in brackets indicate the position on the chart the previous week. The “^” (aka “a bullet”) indicates that a song gained spins since last week

Upcoming Add Dates:
Feb 22: HAC/AC: Kimberley Caldwell: “Mess of You”

Idol Headlines for 1/25/10

Adam Lambert does Toronto

We already know that Adam will be interviewed by Jian Ghomeshi on Monday on CBC’s Q, which airs at 10 a.m. and repeats at 10 p.m. on CBC Radio One. And yes, I will be listening.

The real fun should come Monday afternoon when Adam visits MuchMusic HQ. He will be appearing on MuchOnDemand at 5 p.m. I know all you Adam fans are a devoted lot from the comments I get whenever I post about Adam, so I’m sure there’ll be a crowd at Queen and John waiting for the guylinered one.

Our ‘American Idol’ sings the national anthem in New Orleans

Kris, who has a few months of reigning over the “Idol” world left, sang the national anthem in New Orleans this afternoon, where the New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings are vying for the NFC championship and a spot in the Feb. 7 Super Bowl.

Do you like his rendition? We did, but we also like a new ditty emerging on Twitter among Saints fans, “Favre on the ground, Favre on the ground.”

Wonder what inspired that one?

Vikings bring “pants on the ground” guy to New Orleans

Platt, 62, performed the song less than two weeks ago on American Idol. Vikings quarterback Brett Favre chanted the refrain in the locker room after Minnesota upended the Cowboys last Sunday.

A reader tells us that Greg Coleman of KFAN has reported that Platt will be on the sidelines today with the Vikings. Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Platt has made an appearance at a team meeting.

Happy holidays for Jennifer Hudson as she enjoys a sunshine break with fiancé

After her stunning turn over the weekend in MTV’s Hope For Haiti Now concert, Dreamgirls star Jennifer Hudson took a well-earned break in the Caribbean with her partner David Otunga.

The curvaceous singer, 28, gave birth to David Daniel – named after his lawyer-turned-WWE wrestler father – in August last year.

But clearly some quality couple time was a priority for the new parents. Jennifer Hudson with her fiancé were at the Atlantis Paradise Island while attending the Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational in Nassau, Bahamas.

Music Review: Jason Castro – The Love Uncompromised EP

On to 2010, Castro delivered his first acoustic release, The Love Uncompromised EP. It has a solid foundation with the first track and lead single, “Let’s Just Fall In Love Again.” The simple and catchy guitar riff allows Jason Castro’s beautiful melody-minded creativity to shine thru. Those who watched American Idol fell in love with Castro’s down-to-earth personality backed by an insatiable musical appetite. With the passionate vocals produced in “Sweet Medicine,” Castro’s musical intimacy and passion for the art clearly shines forth throughout the five tracks. “I feel like the album really captures my personality,” Castro says. “People got to know me a bit on the show, so I wanted to build on that by including all these songs I’ve written about my life. I wanted to share with people the things that are meaningful to me.”

Michael Johns performed at Molly Malones in Los Angeles last night. His set list included a new song, “Where Are You Now”, “Hour in America” (unreleased from The Rising) plus “Tear Us Apart”, “Heart On My Sleeve”, “God Of Wine” (Third Eye Blind), “Redemption”, “Fool’s Gold”, “Turn To You”, and “Fake Plastic Trees” (Radiohead).
