http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/entertainment/entertainment/view_article.php?article_id=105876RP bet leading ‘Asian Idol’ poll By Bayani San Diego Jr. Philippines Inquirer Last updated 01:11am (Mla time) 12/10/2007 MANILA, Philippines - A week before the grand finals on Dec. 15 and 16, Filipina Mau Marcelo is leading the pack in an online poll conducted on the official “Asian Idol” website ( www.theasianidol.tv). Marcelo has 33.51 percent of the 970 votes cast up till the evening of Dec. 8. She is followed by Vietnam’s Phuong Vy, with 23.92 percent; Indonesia’s Mike Mohede, 20.62 percent; Malaysia’s Jaclyn Victor, 12.78 percent; Singapore’s Hady Mirza, 8.04 percent; and India’s Abhijeet Sawant, 1.13 percent. Perci Intalan, ABC 5’s head of Creative and Entertainment Production, told Inquirer Entertainment that the result of the online poll was largely indicative of the contestants’ current standing in the regional contest which is being held in Jakarta, Indonesia for the first time. “Mau’s closest competitor seems to be Vietnam’s Phuong. Mike, on the other hand, was chosen by Indonesians in a contest among four local ‘Idol’ winners. I heard that Malaysia’s Jaclyn is a superstar in her own country, though.” Voting system “In sum, they’re all strong contenders,” explained Intalan who had seen the contestants’ performance videos in the “Road to Asian Idol” TV special, aired on ABC 5 last Saturday. According to the web site, viewers will be asked to vote for two contestants to eliminate “population size … as a determining factor. It takes into account any potential national bias.” The system was formulated by FremantleMedia, “Idol” franchise holder, to ensure a level playing field. It’s mathematical, Intalan agreed. However, he disagreed with the strategy being proposed by some Filipinos in websites and blogs. “To help Mau, they suggest that voters pick Mau as first choice and the weakest candidate as second. The thing is, we have no way of knowing who’s the weakest,” he clarified. In the end, the “Asian Idol” system renders the second choice as the more crucial vote, Intalan asserted. He also cautioned Filipinos not to put Mau as their first and second choices because their votes would be deemed “invalid.” “If they only vote for Mau and leave the second slot empty, their votes will also be considered null and void,” he said. Details on the voting have yet to be finalized, said Intalan. Needless to say, Filipinos can course their votes through all the local cell phone companies, he related. The contest’s web site also said that each county had been asked to send its own judge. An early list in Wikipedia named the following jurors: Indonesia’s Indra Lesmana, India’s Anu Malik, Malaysia’s Paul Moss, Singapore’s Ken Lim, Vietnam’s Siu Black and the Philippines’ Pilita Corrales. Intalan also told the Inquirer that last year’s “American Idol” winner Taylor Hicks, “Australian Idol” champ Guy Sebastian and Filipino band Rivermaya had been invited to perform in the regional tilt.

O MINEEEEEE ... (indicative that HE's mine...LOL!) i cant for the world believe this, but i did want it soooooo much for TAYLOR to have this happen... bring him close okay, whoever is responsible for this, especially if it is TAYLOR himself, or FREMANTLE, or his management firm, i want to say a personal THANX FROM DAPHNE@SINGAPORE !!! that means TAYLOR will be zipping straight into Indonesia, where the Indonesian Malay language is spoken and English as well. Our winner is already headed that way yesterday. erm....swallow, is TAYLOR already now in some hotel here in Asia. O, might he stop over here in Singapore. Im getting so hot around the neck (no collar for me) and actually all over. THis Soul Patrol is on fire !! TAYme, isnt this exciting news. Drink ONLY bottled-water, Take Good Care my love and enjoy Your FAME! YOUR FLAME TAYLOR'sBabe, pls dont put a damper on his surging career. Iv bn a pioneer to this site and have seen lotsa throlls in the heat of all the action. I know TAYLOR will lead a throng of singers..imean a choir of singers. Can anyone confirm for me whether Taylor will be performing on Asian Idol? According to the Asian Idol Website, the performance show will be on December 15 and the results show will be on December 16. If he does perform, I assume it would be on the results show, but am looking for some kind of confirmation. The article in the first post only says that he was invited to perform, not that he would be performing. Or is there a translation issue here, and by saying he has been invited to perform means that he is performing?

I would like to debunk the notion of Asian ppl as only Chinese or only capable of speaking Mandarin. Yes, China is the biggest Asian nation, apart from being the most populous nation in the world. Many Asians are bilingual, some can speak more than 4 languages. Many Asian countries broadcast American TV shows and movies, and listen to mostly English songs. In Singapore, where I come from, English is one of our national languages (Malay, Mandarin and Tamil). Subjects in our schools are taught in English except for Mother Tongue languages. Worry not, as Taylor is quite well known is Asia. American Idol is one of the most popular shows here.

Idol Observer, the poster you posted is for the mall appearances. It has nothing to do with the Asian Idol program. However, it seems that confirmation is coming from THHQ as to the Asian Idol appearance. So there we go.

Not to pounce on Taylor's Babe so much,....I am also from Asia, the Philippines. The great thing about the nations in Asia is that most of us are well rounded...we speak different dialects and languages. We read, write and speak English just as well. We are a test market for a lot of UK and North American artists because our music is so diverse....Taylor brings us a lot of joy because of his old school/ old soul approach to music.

TAYLORETTA, i could never have put it better! another TP for u. there're also the unofficial languages i understand U&I, in Singapore, as well as Asians, have in our grasp that is rooted in our culture, tho vernacular, is each a different language in its own right. not to mention, i did venture out to learn and now speak a spattering of French & Spanish. it is perhaps we have the very varied exposure to languages, are multi-lingual from childhood, and make tremendous effort to understand those who are among us but do not speak the language of our choice, that the constraints of being monolingual has least affected us. as it's said, Music is the Universal language, where we girate, sway, jive or sashay to it ( and let us not be surprised by another issue of differences in dance moves ), TAYLOR is bringing us the one common denominator......first of all, our appreciation of Da Man, a ha... so absolutely! .. but also for binding us in One Love..the love we search that brings us a shared Happiness. im so surprised that this tour by TAYLOR has brought on so many to come on board and post. especially glad to see u here, TAYLORETTA. Guess to TAYLOR ...... it's 'Heaven Knows'! Thanks again for the organisers bringing TAYLOR to me, in ... Asia! TAYLOR...do U feel it....do u feel the Love? HEAVEN KNOWS

Hey you guys you can subscribe to JumpTV for $12.50 for one month and watch the Asian Idol finale on Sony Asia (Sony Entertainment TV, SET) from India. http://www.jumptv.com/en/channel/set/I signed up and I'm watching SonyTV from India right now. You can even make it full screen. You get a program guide that lists the times in your local time. Asian Idol is listed for Saturday, Dec. 15th at 5pm and 6pm my time, CST. Pretty Cool!

Webchick, do you think Taylor will be well received there?
Absolutely. Some of us have worked so hard to get Taylor exposed in Asia and other parts of the globe, though getting the feedback is really painstakingly slow, it is getting great results, like this one. Taylor will be well received there, he is the type of musician that can break barriers cultural, language or otherwise. There are a lot of excited people in my home country and I have said before that they will be more addicted after seeing him live. Go Taylor!
